Featuring & Exhibiting Maine Artists
The Maine arts scene is mutually constitutive with Lights Out. We prioritize and value of work that Maine artists create, providing continual exhibition support for mid-career to professional artists while also showcasing and giving a platform for emerging artists. Whether it be through our interview series, virtual features, pop-up exhibits, or artist residencies, we can’t do this work without the support of our wider community. Joining Lights Out as a member ensures that we can continually grow the recognition that artists from our state deserve.
“When I graduated from art school and moved back in with my family in Raymond, Maine, I was uncertain of what the future may hold for me – I was starting fresh. In the summer of 2021, just a few short months after graduating, Lights Out Gallery reached out to me to do a spotlight video and to include some of my works in their invitational shows. Both were very successful and pivotal for my career. The connections they fostered for me, and the community they showed me and made me feel so welcome in are things I will always remember and cherish. Lights Out Gallery isn’t just about art, it’s about community – they’ll make you feel right at home” - Holden Willard, co-founder of 82Parris
Youth Art Programming
Lights Out began its first inaugural summer program last year with great success thanks to the hard work of Americorps intern Emily Cummings and our guest artists. Summer art programming for youth in Oxford County is underrepresented and we are striving to make art accessible for all. Last year we were able to offer 23 kids summer camp at no cost for two weeks because of sponsorships. With your help, we can grow this program into a staple for youth in the area and be able to create a foundational space for kids to learn and grow as creators.
“The opportunity to teach at Lights Out's Youth Summer Art Program this summer was a joyous experience, allowing me to share my passion and experience with kids in our community, and to help guide them through the creative process, learn new techniques, overcome the fear of trying something new, and bring home artwork that they felt proud of and connected to. “ - Kelli Shedd, Guest artist for Summer camp
Building a community art center in Norway
At the heart of this operation is our Lights Out headquarters in Norway, Maine. Through refurbishing and updating the retired snowshoe factory at 10 Tannery Street, we aim to create a community art center in Western Maine. With sponsorship, you are furthering the growth of community resources and support in an area that is severely lacking what we are creating. On these grounds, we will provide free wifi, a Co-working space with artist studios and a business center, a dance studio, a woodshop and tool library, a printshop, and an exhibit space. This costly venture will pay dividends in the resources that it provides for the community, and any amount of your support is greatly appreciated.
“The vitality and bold vision that Lights Out brings to our community will be game-changing as we transition to a just and regenerative local economy. Supporting a diversity of creators is essential and Lights Out will provide that space”. - Scott Vlaun, Executive Director of Center for an Ecology Based Economy, Norway ME
