Discarded household objects are materials of choice in Kitty Wales’s recent work. They contain memories of the past that morph over time, drifting in and out of original threads. Serving as historical icons, they are assembled to reanimate the memories retained. Through an exploration into the animal world via research and place-based observation, Wales synthesizes contexts and habitats to foster conversations around climate change, utilizing domestic and made-made materials to create a recognizable history and connections from one world to another.
“Each piece in this series evolves through the process of making and experimenting, as I build up multiple layers of color and texture with water-based pencils, graphite, aqua resin, epoxy putty and paper pulp. Some of these layers are visible while others are buried, erased, or altered to mimic the drifting nature of narrative memory”.
Kitty Wales has a MFA in Sculpture from University of Arizona, and a BFA in Sculpture from Boston University. She has been awarded residencies in Berlin Germany, Baku Azerbaijan, and Rhum Island, Scotland. Wales received the 2007 Virginia Groot award, and grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. She has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US as well as in Germany, and Azerbaijan. Her work is in the permanent collection of the DeCordova Museum, the Duxbury Museum, and the Fuller Craft Museum.
