Happy Holidays from Lights Out 💫
We wish you an exciting solstice, and may your holidays be filled with light, life, and love!
Here’s to the days slowly beginning to lengthen, to the dawn beginning to creep over the snow-dusted barren ground sooner than it did the day before. Soon enough, instead of noticing how little sunlight there is, the coldness and iciness, the salt-encrusted shoes and tires, the lifeless facade of winter will melt away.
Tracks of animals scurrying at night with their fresh white coats will be discovered in the blistering brightness of the sun, reflected off a white landscape in the morning. The hawks swooping down, visibly amongst the barren trees, is a privileged sight we often miss in the warm month.
Here’s to the trees, now uncovered armatures, twist and curl unobstructed to the eye. The marcescent beech and oak leaves tremble in the wind but promise a day when the warmth will come back, and they will fall to the gentle insulated roots of the tree. White birches standing tall and frozen, reflecting any light that would unfreeze the water in their trunks, causing them to split. One day, they will not be frozen, and the threat of a loud crack of splitting wood will not linger in the forest. One day, the oaks will have new green leaves that are alive and flowing with chlorophyll.
The liveliness of a cold breath outside, like a steaming cup of coffee, reminds you not merely of the frigid temperature difference between the air in the lungs versus the atmosphere. Each exhalation is a sign of our interaction with the world, a gentle give and take. You are here in the winter, and it may be cold, it may be dark, but there is life teeming under the surface of the dead guise of winter.
Hang out with us on Sunday from 2pm-5pm!
